1979 revision by Imogen Holst and Colin Matthews, in which dynamics and articulation in particular were standardised and aligned with authenticated sources.

Gustav Holst's suite “The Planets”, Op. 32, composed between 1914 and 1916, ranks among the most influential orchestral works of British modernism. The work stands at the intersection of late Romantic sonority and early modernism, illustrating how the English orchestral tradition developed a distinctive, internationally recognized voice around the turn of the century—alongside Elgar, Vaughan Williams, and Delius.

The seven movements evoke no mythological narratives but instead follow the astrological characters of the planets: from brutal power through suspended mysticism to radical dissolution of sound. Holst achieves an exceptional range of orchestral colour, deploying percussive rhythms, modal harmonies, and a chromaticism that was bold for its time. The final movement fades into near-inaudibility and is widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary orchestral endings of the twentieth century.

The vast forces required—including four flutes, bass clarinet, contrabassoon, organ, two harps, celesta, and an offstage women's chorus—serve not mere effect but a finely differentiated sonic architecture, and it is this quality that has secured the work's enduring place as a staple of the symphonic repertoire.

„This music was never intended as program music. Each planet was meant to suggest a particular set of human ideas.“
— Gustav Holst, persönliche Notizen, zitiert in Imogen Holst: 'Gustav Holst: A Biography' (1938)
„Mars began as a study of various irregular time signatures, but evolved into something altogether different.“
— Imogen Holst: 'Gustav Holst: A Biography' (1938)
