Gustav Holst's "The Planets" was composed in 1916 as a monumental suite for large orchestra and is considered the pinnacle of his compositional output. The work shows Holst at the height of his orchestral mastery, combining late Romantic sonority with impressionistic colors and a wholly distinctive harmonic language. The scoring with expanded wind section, large percussion, celesta, organ and women's chorus enables an extraordinary sonic diversity.
Within the English musical landscape of the early 20th century, Holst occupies a special position. While his contemporaries such as Elgar remained more strongly committed to continental Romanticism, Holst developed a more modern, at times austere musical voice that incorporated oriental influences and modal harmony. His engagement with Eastern philosophy and Sanskrit literature had a lasting impact on his compositional style.
"The Planets" is said to have deeply impressed audiences at its complete premiere in 1920. The work quickly established itself in the international concert repertoire and is today considered one of the most popular orchestral works of the 20th century, founding Holst's reputation as a major representative of English music.
