Edvard Grieg is one of the most significant figures of nineteenth-century musical nationalism. His Lyric Pieces for piano, compiled over several decades into ten volumes, are considered the heart of his output — miniature character pieces that blend Norwegian folk music tradition with the harmonic language of Romanticism.
"Wedding Day at Troldhaugen" (Op. 65, No. 6) is among the most celebrated of these pieces and carries a deeply personal resonance: Troldhaugen, Norwegian for "hill of the trolls," was Grieg's own country estate near Bergen, where he lived from 1885 onwards and which became his creative retreat. The piece radiates festive exuberance and folk-like energy, with dance-like rhythms and a lyrical middle section of tender intimacy — a characteristic interplay between jubilation and sensitivity.
In the orchestral arrangement presented here, the work unfolds with a richness of sound that suits its celebratory character particularly well. The full orchestra, with brass, timpani, and percussion, lends brilliance and weight to the rhythmically incisive passages, while the strings preserve the characteristically warm, Romantic quality of the more songful sections.
