The three orchestral pieces from "Sigurd Jorsalfar" derive from Grieg's incidental music to Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's drama about the Norwegian crusader king. In the orchestral version of 1892, Grieg reveals himself as a master of characteristic programme music that translates Nordic myths and history into resonant musical images. The music combines his typical harmonic language with grand orchestral gestures.
The prelude "In the King's Hall" opens with festive splendour, while "Borghild's Dream" as a lyrical intermezzo reveals the composer's more intimate, melodically elegiac side. The famous Homage March is considered one of Grieg's most effective orchestral pieces and demonstrates his ability to achieve monumental sonic effects.
The suite exemplifies Grieg's romantic national style, which fuses Norwegian folk music idioms with the European orchestral tradition. Unlike in the better-known "Peer Gynt" suites, Grieg here largely dispenses with direct folkloric quotations and instead develops his own "Nordic tone," characterised by modal harmony and distinctive rhythms.
