Gabriel Fauré's Elegy in C minor ranks among the most precious gems of French cello literature. Originally composed in 1883 for cello and piano, the composer orchestrated the work in 1901 for chamber orchestra, creating one of the most expressive miniatures of his creative period. The elegiac mood combines with that characteristic melancholy which permeates Fauré's entire œuvre.
The composition stands as exemplary of late 19th-century French music, which turned away from German monumentality and instead emphasized nuanced expression and sonic refinement. Fauré's harmonic language already shows clear signs of those modal inflections and chromatic veiling that mark him as a precursor to Impressionism.
The work is distinguished by its noble restraint and the intimate dialogue between soloist and orchestra. The orchestral version lends the original piano accompaniment additional color without destroying the chamber music intimacy. The Elegy is considered a prime example of Fauré's ability to achieve maximum emotional impact with economical means.
