Gabriel Fauré's Requiem Op. 48 took shape over an extended period of more than fifteen years and is now regarded as one of the most significant sacred choral works of French late Romanticism. It stands in the tradition of the great Mass and Requiem composition, yet strikes a distinctively individual tone: rather than dramatic upheaval and the terrors of the Last Judgement, it is gentleness, consolation, and an almost otherworldly inwardness that prevail.
The musical language is defined by delicate harmony, flowing lines, and a subtle handling of modal inflections — characteristics that mark Fauré's style as a whole and place him between late Romanticism and early French modernism. The scoring for harp, organ, and strings creates a sound world that combines transparency with warmth, setting the work clearly apart from the pathos of German late Romanticism.
Fauré himself is said to have understood the work as an expression of a quiet, almost serene contemplation of death — a personal statement of faith beyond liturgical convention. Whether he actually phrased it in precisely these terms cannot be established with certainty; as a characterisation, however, this description captures the spirit of the work with remarkable accuracy.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
