Sinfonic scherzo on a ballad by Goethe.

Paul Dukas wrote his symphonic scherzo “L'apprenti sorcier” in 1897, based on Goethe's ballad of the same name, creating one of the most frequently performed orchestral works of French late Romanticism. The piece stands as a prime example of that generation of French composers who, following the model of the German symphonists — above all Wagner and Franck — committed themselves to an ambitious orchestral language without abandoning the elegance and precision of the French tradition.

In terms of sound, the work combines vivid motivic writing with colourful, highly effective orchestration. Dukas deploys the large orchestra — with woodwinds, brass, harp, percussion, and strings — with a keen sense of dynamics and rhythmic incisiveness. The music possesses a distinctive energy that oscillates between dancing lightness and menacing power.

Within Dukas's small but carefully curated output, “L'apprenti sorcier” occupies a central place. The composer was known for his rigorous self-criticism and destroyed a large part of his works — which makes this piece all the more significant as a testament to his consummate craftsmanship and his unerring musical imagination.

„The new orchestral piece by Mr. Dukas, "L'apprenti sorcier," a scherzo based on Goethe, was received with lively applause. The work displays a masterly hand in orchestration and a rare gift for conjuring musical images that speak directly to the imagination.“

"L'apprenti sorcier" is based on the ballad of the same name by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and was conceived by Dukas as a symphonic scherzo. Its premiere at a concert of the Société Nationale de Musique was an immediate and resounding success — the work was performed again that same evening as an encore. It made Dukas famous overnight and remains his best-known work to this day. The piece gained worldwide recognition once more through Walt Disney's Fantasia (1940), in which Mickey Mouse took on the role of the sorcerer's apprentice — Disney had personally sought Dukas's permission, which was granted. Dukas himself was known as an exceptionally self-critical composer who destroyed the bulk of his output; "L'apprenti sorcier" is one of the few works he allowed to be published.
