Max Bruch's "Kol Nidrei" op. 47 from 1880 ranks among the most moving works in the Romantic cello literature. The German composer drew upon the traditional Jewish melody of the prayer of the same name, which is sung on the eve of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Bruch transformed this ancient tune into a deeply emotional concert piece that allows the melancholic beauty and spiritual intensity of the original to shine forth in the musical language of Romanticism.
The work reveals Bruch's characteristic gift for memorable, lyrical melodies and his mastery of orchestral treatment. The warm, dark tonal colors of the violoncello merge with a sensitively crafted orchestral accompaniment to create a sound world of great intimacy. Typical of Bruch's creative output is the combination of folk or traditional melodies with the formal language of German Romanticism.
"Kol Nidrei" stands as exemplary of late 19th-century Romanticism, in which composers increasingly drew upon national or religious traditions. The work is considered one of the few significant examples of the reception of Jewish music in German art music of this period and has established itself as a permanent part of the cello repertoire.
