Frank Bridge's orchestral suite "The Sea" was composed in 1911 and is considered one of the most significant examples of British programme music from the late Romantic period. The work shows Bridge at a stage when he was still firmly rooted in the Romantic idiom, before he later turned to more modern musical languages. The suite reflects the characteristic turn towards native landscape and nature that typified English music of the time.
Bridge's musical language combines French impressions with the German late Romantic tradition. The orchestration for large orchestra exploits all the colours of the instrumental palette to capture the various aspects and moods of the sea. The harp and expanded wind section in particular lend the work a shimmering, atmospheric quality.
The work stands as exemplary of the English Renaissance around the turn of the century, when composers like Bridge, Elgar and Delius developed a distinctive national musical language. "The Sea" is said to rank among Bridge's most popular orchestral compositions and demonstrates his mastery of orchestral writing before he turned to more experimental compositional techniques in later years.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
