Georges Bizet's Symphony in C major was composed in 1855, when the composer was just seventeen years old and still studying at the Paris Conservatoire. The work remained unpublished during his lifetime and was not rediscovered until 1935, more than sixty years after Bizet's early death. Despite its youthful origins, the symphony already displays the characteristic elegance and melodic richness that would later define Bizet's operatic works.
The four-movement symphony combines classical formal rigor with Romantic expressiveness and reveals clear influences of the French orchestral tradition. Bizet's instrumentation is colorful and transparent, his melodic writing marked by natural grace. Particularly remarkable is the way the young composer handles the orchestra – with that lightness and sense for sonic nuances that would later reach perfection in the "Carmen" Suite and the "L'Arlésienne" music.
The work is considered a remarkable testament to Bizet's musical talent and stands as an exemplar of French Romantic symphonic writing, which distinguished itself from the German tradition through its Mediterranean cheerfulness and orchestral sophistication.
The premiere was conducted by the composer Felix Weingartner.
