Hector Berlioz composed the overture “Le Roi Lear”, op. 4, in 1831 during his stay in Italy as a recipient of the Prix de Rome. The work was written under the influence of Shakespeare's tragedy of the same name and belongs to that series of concert overtures through which Berlioz redefined the genre as an independent symphonic form — programmatically charged, yet not tied to any stage action.
In terms of sound, the overture moves between brooding sublimity and passionate drama. Berlioz deploys orchestral color with great vividness: strings and winds are treated as contrasting blocks of sound, while the drama unfolds through characteristic tempo contrasts and unexpected harmonic turns. The score reflects the unmistakable style of French early Romanticism — impulsive, richly colored, and marked by an almost theatrical expressivity.
Within the context of French orchestral music of the 1830s, the work occupies a singular position: while the Opéra dominated musical life in France, Berlioz used overtures such as this one to create an independent symphonic world of his own. “Le Roi Lear” is considered a characteristic example of his early orchestral style and a testament to his lifelong fascination with Shakespeare.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
