Mily Balakirev, one of the central figures of the Russian nationalist circle known as the "Mighty Handful," completed his symphonic poem “In Bohemia” in 1905. The work thus belongs to a late period in the composer's output and reflects his lifelong enthusiasm for folk music influences – in this case drawn from the Bohemian-Slavic cultural sphere.
The score displays Balakirev's characteristic musical language: richly coloured orchestration, melodically driven themes, and a harmonic idiom that moves between late-Romantic chromaticism and modal folk-inflected turns of phrase. The large orchestra – scored for triple woodwind, harp, and full percussion – enables atmospherically dense soundscapes that approach the impressionistic tendencies of his contemporaries without directly adopting their stylistic devices.
The work takes its place within the tradition of programmatic tone poetry of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as cultivated by Balakirev's Russian contemporaries as well. In turning to a non-Russian subject, the composer nonetheless remains faithful to his pan-Slavic outlook – a trait that runs throughout his entire creative life.
