Johann Christian Bach, the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach, ranks among the most elegant representatives of the galant style, and throughout his life stood between his German roots and a pronounced “Italianità”. Following his training in Italy and his work as an opera composer in Milan and London, he developed a musical language that combines light transparency, melodic brilliance, and clarity of classical form.
The overture to “La Cascina” emerges from this opera-centred environment and bears all the hallmarks of Bach's characteristic personal style: songlike melodic writing, finely chiselled string textures, and a well-balanced relationship between woodwinds, horns, and basso continuo. The harpsichord as part of the ensemble reflects the conventions of an era in which opera seria was still closely bound up with continuo playing. The scoring for oboes, bassoons, and horns lends the work a distinctively warm yet festive sound.
Within the context of the pre-Classical opera overture as cultivated in London and Milan, this piece exemplifies the courtly, amiable tone that made Johann Christian Bach a significant forerunner of the Classical style — and a highly regarded contemporary of the young Mozart.
