Johann Christian Bach, the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach, was one of the most influential composers of the galant style in the second half of the 18th century. In addition to symphonies and chamber music, his output includes a number of stage works written primarily for London and Mannheim. The opera “Tutore e la pupilla” was composed in 1778 and belongs to his later works for the stage, in which his elegant, singing style is particularly evident.
The present “Overture to Tutore e la pupilla” in the arrangement by McAlister makes this charming piece accessible for the modern orchestral repertoire. As a concise introduction to the stage work, the overture reflects Bach's masterful ability to combine melodic memorability with clear, transparent orchestration. Influences from Italian opera buffa blend here with the courtly, elegant tone that Bach cultivated in London.
The work offers orchestras a rewarding pre-Classical repertoire piece that can be used effectively in concert programmes both as a standalone work and in the thematic context of Johann Christian Bach's output.
