Giacomo Puccini's "Crisantemi" was composed in 1890 as one of the few purely instrumental works by the great opera composer. This piece for string orchestra already displays the melodic expressiveness and harmonic sophistication that would characterize Puccini's later stage works. The title "Chrysanthemums" refers to the autumn flowers regarded as symbols of mourning in Italy and suggests the work's elegiac fundamental character.
The composition reveals Puccini's mastery in handling the strings and his ability to achieve intense emotional effects even without a dramaturgical narrative framework. The warm, lyrical melody combines with an immediacy of expression typical of Italian Romanticism, while harmonic progressions already point toward the mature opera composer.
"Crisantemi" stands as an exemplar of that late 19th-century Italian instrumental music which developed distinctive poetic qualities despite opera's dominance. Puccini is said to have later incorporated thematic material from this work into his opera "Manon Lescaut," which underscores the close connection between his instrumental and vocal music.
