Charles Hubert Parry's setting of William Blake's famous poem "And did those feet in ancient times" was created in 1916 as a patriotic commission for a suffragette rally. The work, which would later become an unofficial national anthem of England under the title "Jerusalem," embodies Parry's late Romantic compositional style with its noble melody and powerful harmonic language.
The music is characterized by its hymnic dignity and the distinctive English choral sound that shifts between pastoral intimacy and triumphant grandeur. Parry's orchestration employs the classic Romantic instrumentation with subtle yet effective wind writing that supports the choral singing without overwhelming it. The harmonic language remains committed to tonal traditions and reflects Parry's conservative stance toward the modernist currents of his time.
As one of the leading representatives of English late Romanticism, Parry stands exemplarily with this work for the renaissance of English choral music around the turn of the century. "Jerusalem" is considered the pinnacle of his output and one of the most significant English choral works altogether, capable of capturing England's national identity in musical terms.
