Hans Christian Lumbye (1810–1874) was the most important Danish composer of light music in the nineteenth century. As long-serving conductor of the Tivoli Orchestra in Copenhagen, he shaped a distinctly Nordic variant of the popular orchestral piece. His work combines the lightness of Viennese dance music with an unmistakable Scandinavian character – which is why he is sometimes referred to as "the Strauss of the North."
The Traumbilder Fantasy is a prime example of Lumbye's ability to unite symphonic craftsmanship with dance-like elegance. The title points to a dreamily poetic underlying mood, expressed through floating melodic lines, colourful orchestration, and a flowing, atmospheric tone. The full orchestra is deployed with care and a keen sense of timbre, yet the piece never loses its light, entertaining character.
The work belongs to that part of Lumbye's output that goes well beyond mere ballroom music, opening up an imaginative and atmospherically rich sound world for concert audiences. In its combination of Romantic melodic abundance and craftsman-like elegance, it stands as a characteristic example of Danish salon orchestral writing from the Biedermeier and Romantic periods.
