Antonín Dvořák's Serenade for Strings in E minor, Op. 22, was composed in 1875 and ranks among the best-known works of Czech National Romanticism. In it, Dvořák combines an exceptional gift for melody with the warm, homogeneous sound of the string ensemble — a medium that gives his characteristically vocal musical language its most effective voice.
The work stands in a long European tradition of string serenades and shows Dvořák at the height of his early creative period: the music breathes the spirit of Bohemian folk tradition without ever resorting to folkloristic cliché. Lyrical warmth, rhythmic vitality, and a natural, flowing part-writing define the character of the work and lend it an immediacy that has made it an indispensable part of the string orchestra repertoire to this day.
Written during the period in which Dvořák was gaining increasing international recognition, the Serenade reflects the spirit of Czech late Romanticism — confident in its national character, yet always committed to the broader European artistic ideal. Brahms, who recognized and championed Dvořák's talent at an early stage, is said to have particularly admired the melodic naturalness of these years.
