Antonín Dvořák's Carnival Overture was composed in 1891 as the middle section of his three-part overture cycle "Nature, Life and Love." Between the contemplative overture "In Nature's Realm" and the dramatic "Othello" Overture, the Carnival piece forms the joyful climax of the trilogy. The premiere took place on April 28, 1892 in Prague under the composer's direction.

The work in A major sparkles with vitality and Bohemian temperament. After a slow, almost mystical introduction, a captivating carnival full of dance and jubilation unfolds. Here Dvořák masterfully combines his Slavic sense of homeland with the international romantic orchestral tradition. Particularly characteristic are the folk-like melodies, the rhythmic vitality, and the brilliant orchestration that assigns rewarding parts to every instrumental section.

The present arrangement by Bartos and Cubr makes this popular orchestral work accessible to a broader range of performers without compromising the original character and orchestral coloring. The Carnival Overture is today among Dvořák's most frequently performed orchestral works and delights audiences and performers alike.

The Carnival Overture is the middle piece of a three-part cycle originally conceived as a single unified work, titled 'Příroda, život a láska' (Nature, Life and Love), comprising the overtures Op. 91 ('In Nature's Realm'), Op. 92 ('Carnival'), and Op. 93 ('Othello'). Dvořák himself conducted the premiere of all three works in Prague, shortly before embarking on his famous journey to the United States, where he was to become director of the National Conservatory in New York. The cycle is dedicated to Jan Krejčí, Karel Bendl, Hanuš Wihan, and František Ondříček — each of the three works dedicated to one of these four Czech musicians.
