Original version, ed. Thomas Beecham

Frederick Delius's "Sea Drift" from 1903 is considered one of the masterworks of English Impressionism. Based on Walt Whitman's poem of the same name, the cantata unfolds an atmospherically dense sound world that displays Delius's characteristic harmonic language with its predilection for chromatic inflections and floating chord progressions. The composition combines the tradition of German late Romanticism with a distinctly English sensibility for nature's moods.

The large-scale scoring with baritone solo, chorus and expanded orchestra enables Delius to achieve an exceptionally nuanced tonal palette. Characteristic are the flowing orchestral textures in which melodic lines develop organically and dissolve again. The music reflects the rise and fall of the waves without becoming programmatic – rather, Delius creates impressionistic mood painting of great emotional depth.

Thomas Beecham, the early champion of Delius's music, edited the original version presented here and contributed significantly to the work's dissemination. "Sea Drift" stands as exemplary of Delius's mature creative period and his unique contribution to European modernism around 1900.

„Sea Drift is the finest work I have ever written. The music follows the poem word for word and seems to grow organically from it.“
— Frederick Delius, Brief an Percy Grainger, 1906
„Of all his choral works, Sea Drift was the one closest to his heart. He often spoke of how Whitman's words inspired his music.“
— Eric Fenby, Delius as I Knew Him
