Alfredo Casella's Cello Concerto Op. 58 was composed in 1935 at a time when the Italian composer had largely completed his stylistic evolution from early impressionist influences toward a neoclassical stance. The work demonstrates Casella's characteristic fusion of modern harmony with clear formal structures and reflects his efforts to develop a specifically Italian modernism that distinguished itself from the dominant German and French influences.
The concerto's musical language is characterized by transparent orchestration that, despite the chamber-like scoring, affords the solo instrument sufficient space for its lyrical qualities. Casella draws upon his experience as conductor and pianist to create a well-balanced relationship between solo passages and orchestral tuttis.
The work is considered representative of Casella's mature creative period and his endeavors to revitalize Italian instrumental music. The C minor tonality lends the concerto a serious, at times elegiac fundamental character that is typical of Casella's late works and documents his departure from the more experimental compositions of his middle creative phase.
