Alfredo Casella's Concerto for Orchestra op. 61 was composed in 1935 as a mature work by the Italian composer and reflects his characteristic fusion of neoclassical formal concepts with modern harmonic language. The three-movement work follows the traditional structure of Sinfonia – Passacaglia – Inno and demonstrates Casella's mastery of orchestral sonority, which oscillates between impressionistic colors and taut contrapuntal writing.
The composition stands as exemplary of Italian music of the 1930s, which sought to break free from the Romantic heritage without sacrificing melodic expressiveness. Casella develops a distinctive musical language that combines French influences from his Paris student years with Italian cantabile qualities. Particularly in the central Passacaglia, he unfolds his polyphonic artistry, while the concluding Inno, with its hymnic character, underscores the triumphant nature of the complete work.
The Concerto for Orchestra is regarded as one of Casella's most significant orchestral works and documents his position as a pioneer of Italian modernism between the world wars.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
