Bruckner’s First Symphony occupies a unique place within his oeuvre, as its two principal versions—the Linz Version of 1866 and the Vienna Version of 1891—were prepared without documented interventions by third parties. While the Vienna Version had been available in print since the late nineteenth century, the original Linz Version was rediscovered only in the 1930s and published by Robert Haas in 1935.

Both versions share essentially the same formal design, differing mainly in orchestration, compositional detail, and certain structural refinements. Particularly noteworthy is the newly composed transition from the Trio to the Scherzo reprise in the Vienna Version. In modern performance practice, the Linz Version is generally preferred, whereas the Vienna Version offers valuable insight into Bruckner’s mature compositional thinking. Taken together, the two versions document the composer’s artistic development over a period of twenty-five years. The symphony has a performance duration of approximately 50–55 minutes.

This reprint is based on the revised edition of the Haas score published by Leopold Nowak in 1965. The edition contains no changes to the musical content, but incorporates a number of minor editorial standardizations.

Anton Bruckner's First Symphony in C minor was composed in the 1860s and marks the true beginning of his symphonic output — the body of work that would establish him as one of the most significant figures in late Romantic Austrian symphonic music. The score already bears unmistakable hallmarks of Bruckner's musical language: powerful waves of intensification, pedal-point bass lines, and a distinctive sense of monumental architecture.

Compared to the later symphonies, the work has a rougher, more urgent quality, with rhythmic energy and a certain impulsiveness that Bruckner himself — if tradition is to be believed — reportedly called his "saucy little maid." The First thus stands at the threshold between the Classical-Romantic tradition of Schubert and Schumann and the expansive symphonic thinking that Bruckner would go on to develop over the following decades.

The edition presented here, by Robert Haas, represents an attempt to reconstruct an original version of the text and draws on early sources. As such, it forms part of the complex editorial history that has accompanied Bruckner's symphonies to this day, and offers a valuable glimpse into the genesis of this consequential debut work.

„The "First" is my cheeky little broom.“
— Anton Bruckner, mündlich überliefert; dokumentiert in: August Göllerich / Max Auer, „Anton Bruckner. Ein Lebens- und Schaffensbild", Bd. II (Regensburg, 1928)
„He described it as the most "audacious" of his children and took particular pride in it, precisely because, youthful as it was, it already bore his own unmistakable voice.“
— Paraphrase einer mündlichen Äußerung Bruckners, überliefert durch Josef Schalk; zitiert in: Max Auer, „Anton Bruckner. Sein Leben und Werk" (Wien, 1923)

Bruckner himself conducted the premiere of his Symphony No. 1 in C minor, one of the rare occasions on which he appeared as a conductor of a major orchestral work. The symphony was composed in 1865-66 in Linz and is considered Bruckner's first fully mature symphony; he himself later referred to it affectionately as "das kecke Beserl," an Austrian expression meaning roughly "the cheeky little miss." The edition prepared by Robert Haas, published in 1935 as part of the complete works edition, is based on the so-called Linz version of 1866, that is, the work in its original form, as distinct from the later Vienna revision of 1891. The premiere was warmly received by the audience, though the critical response was more guarded.

The composer conducted the premiere himself.
