Lili Boulanger's "D'un soir triste" was composed in 1918, in the final year of the composer's life, who died at only 24. The work ranks among the most compelling examples of her mature musical language, which combines French sound culture with highly personal expressive power. The tone poem demonstrates Boulanger's mastery of orchestration and her ability to create atmospheric density through refined instrumentation.
Stylistically, the work moves between late Romantic harmony and Impressionist tone colors characteristic of French music around 1918. Boulanger develops her own synthesis of melodic expressivity and subtle orchestral technique that clearly distinguishes itself from the approaches of her contemporaries. The scoring with expanded wind section, celesta, and harp enables differentiated sound mixtures.
The work also exists in a version for cello and piano, which Boulanger herself created. This dual form of the work underscores the fundamentally chamber music character of the composition, even though the orchestral version fully realizes the music's expressive potential. "D'un soir triste" is considered one of the principal works from Boulanger's late creative period.
