The famous Polovtsian Dances originate from Alexander Borodin's unfinished opera "Prince Igor," which was only completed after his death in 1887 by Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov. These exotic ballet scenes from the second act are among the most popular orchestral pieces of Russian Romanticism and demonstrate Borodin's mastery in fusing Russian and Oriental musical worlds.

The dances depict the magnificent feast of the Polovtsian Khan, who seeks to impress the captive Prince Igor. Here Borodin unfolds a colorful panorama ranging from gentle, melancholic women's choruses to wild, rhythmically ecstatic warrior dances. The memorable melodies and brilliant orchestration quickly made the work a concert favorite.

The present edition of the New Critical Performing Edition (NCPE) by Nieweg and Bradburd offers a scholarly score that takes into account both Borodin's original intentions and the additions by those who completed it. This edition enables authentic performance practice of this masterpiece of Russian operatic music.

Date
1890
The Polovtsian Dances (Половецкие пляски) originated as part of Borodin's opera “Prince Igor”, on which he worked from around 1869 until his death in 1887, leaving it unfinished. The opera was completed posthumously by Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov and received its premiere on 4 November (23 October) 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. The date "1890" in the work's title most likely refers to the edition cited in the title (NCPE, Nieweg/Bradburd) rather than to a separate concert premiere of the orchestral version without chorus. However, Borodin had already presented the dances (Act 2) in a concert performance with chorus under Rimsky-Korsakov in St. Petersburg on 11 March 1879.
