Orchestra version by the composer.

Georges Bizet's “Jeux d'enfants”, op. 22, dates from 1871 and ranks among the most charming works in nineteenth-century French orchestral music. Originally conceived as a collection of piano pieces for four hands, Bizet himself arranged five selected pieces for orchestra, a version that became known as the “Petite Suite”. The work stands as a prime example of the elegant style of French late Romanticism, marked by wit and lightness of touch.

The music captivates through its directness and playful character: clear contours, transparent orchestration, and a gift for melody that also distinguishes Bizet as the composer of “Carmen”. The musical language is suffused with subtle irony and tender poetry — a work that effortlessly unites the world of childhood with artistic sophistication. The scoring reveals Bizet's confident command of the orchestra: woodwinds, brass, and strings combine to create a luminous sound that never becomes overloaded.

Within the French music of its time, the work belongs to a tradition defined by precise formal construction and colouristic elegance — qualities that would later become hallmarks of Ravel and Saint-Saëns as well. “Jeux d'enfants” remains to this day one of Bizet's most accessible and, at the same time, most accomplished works.

Bizet's "Jeux d'enfants" was originally written in 1871 as a cycle of twelve pieces for piano four hands (op. 22), from which Bizet selected five to arrange for orchestra, a version that became known as the "Petite Suite." The orchestration was carried out by Bizet himself. The suite brings together the movements "Marche" (Trompette et Tambour), "Berceuse" (La Poupée), "Impromptu" (La Toupie), "Duo" (Petit Mari, Petite Femme), and "Galop" (Le Bal). The work ranks among the most charming and best-loved of Bizet's orchestral compositions, yet it predates his great operatic triumph with "Carmen" (1875).
