Béla Bartók is one of the central figures of the early twentieth-century European avant-garde. His intensive engagement with the folk music of Hungary, Romania, and the Balkans — regions he travelled through as a researcher and collector — fundamentally shaped his entire compositional thinking. The Romanian Folk Dances were composed in 1915, originally for piano, and subsequently arranged for small orchestra by the composer himself.

In the orchestral version, the brief dance movements unfold with an immediate, earthy character. Bartók's musical language combines folk-inspired melody and asymmetrical rhythms with a transparent, chamber-like instrumentation. The scoring — two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, and strings — keeps the timbres deliberately unadorned, allowing the melodic lines to speak with their inherent directness and power.

The work exemplifies Bartók's aim not to transform authentic folk material, but to bring it to life through the craft of masterful writing. In this respect, it belongs to the broader context of an Eastern European modernist nationalism that — unlike the Romantic nationalism of the nineteenth century — was grounded in rigorous fieldwork and gave rise to a new and distinctly individual musical language.

Bartók originally arranged the Romanian Folk Dances, Sz. 68 / BB 76, for solo piano in 1915, with the orchestral version (Sz. 68a) following in 1917. The seven dances are based on authentic melodies that Bartók had collected during his ethnomusicological field trips through Transylvania. The orchestral version premiered on February 11, 1917, in Budapest. The piece quickly became one of his most frequently performed works and played a significant role in bringing Romanian folk music to wider concert audiences.

Also premiered in 1917
