Bartók's Second Violin Concerto, composed in 1938, represents one of the Hungarian master's most accessible yet sophisticated works. Written during his final European years before emigrating to America, the concerto demonstrates Bartók's mature synthesis of folk elements with modernist techniques. The work balances virtuosic demands with lyrical expression, creating a dialogue between soloist and orchestra that is both dramatic and intimate.

The concerto's harmonic language reflects Bartók's characteristic blend of Hungarian folk idioms, complex rhythmic patterns, and chromatic harmonies. Unlike some of his more austere compositions, this work reveals a warmer, more romantic character while maintaining the composer's distinctive voice. The orchestration is rich and colorful, featuring the full resources of a large symphony orchestra including prominent roles for harp and celesta.

This concerto stands as a testament to Bartók's ability to create music that is simultaneously rooted in Hungarian tradition and universally appealing. The work is said to have been written with considerable attention to the soloist's technical and expressive capabilities, resulting in a piece that has become a cornerstone of the violin concerto repertoire and one of Bartók's most frequently performed orchestral works.

The work was premiered by Hungarian violinist Zoltán Székely, who had also commissioned the concerto from Bartók. Székely had originally wanted a set of variations, but Bartók composed a traditional three-movement concerto instead. The piece was written during Bartók's final years in Europe, before he emigrated to the United States in 1940.
