Anton Stepanovich Arensky, a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov and later teacher of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin, wrote his Piano Concerto in F minor, Op. 2 in 1882 — an early work by a composer who was just twenty years old at the time. It emerged from the world of Russian late Romanticism, a tradition shaped in equal measure by national heritage and Western European, particularly German, models.
In terms of sound, the work inhabits a lyrical, Romantic language reminiscent of Schumann and Chopin, without concealing its Russian character. The solo piano unfolds an elegant, singing melodic line, set within a transparently scored orchestra of strings, woodwinds, brass, and timpani. The overall tone is ardent and youthfully impulsive, with a natural gift for melodic invention that already hints at Arensky's later works.
As Op. 2, the concerto marks the early awakening of a composer who moved between the worlds of the Russian national school and the European artistic ideal. It possesses the fresh, unspoiled charm of a debut work, while bearing witness to a level of compositional craft that is remarkable for so young a composer.
