Anton Stepanovich Arensky ranks among the most refined representatives of late Russian Romanticism. A student of Rimsky-Korsakov and teacher of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin, he occupied a key position between generations. His style combines Slavic melodicism with Western European—above all Schumannesque—formal rigour: elegant, melodious, and crafted with great care.
The suite from the ballet music for “Egyptian Nights”, composed around 1900, reflects the fascination with Oriental subjects so characteristic of the turn of the century. Arensky employs a richly coloured, symphonically elaborated orchestration that blends exotic atmosphere with the polished tone of Russian late Romanticism. The musical language is at once pictorial and dance-like, without ever lapsing into the folkloristic—a quality that distinguishes Arensky's music in general.
The work was written at a time when Russian musical life was mediating between national heritage and European modernism. Arensky stood firmly on the conservative side of this divide, which lends his music a timeless accessibility, though some of his contemporaries saw fit to accuse it of a certain eclecticism.
