Anton Stepanovich Arensky belonged to that generation of Russian composers who, at the turn of the twentieth century, occupied a mediating position between the nationalist school of the "Mighty Handful" and the Western-oriented St. Petersburg tradition. His music is distinguished by its songlike melodic writing, clarity of form, and an elegant, never overwrought harmonic language – qualities that make him one of the most appealing, if consistently underrated, composers of his era.
The Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky, Op. 35a, were composed in 1894 and are dedicated to the memory of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who had died the previous year. As his theme, Arensky chose an intimate melody from Tchaikovsky's collection of songs – a testament to the deep personal bond between the two composers. The string orchestra unfolds a warm, velvety sound that perfectly suits the work's elegiac character.
In their lyrical intensity and emotional directness, the Variations reflect the spirit of Russian late Romanticism. The work is considered one of the most enduring pieces in Arensky's repertoire, and it impresses through its tonal clarity, nobility of expression, and masterly handling of the string ensemble.
