Anton Stepanovich Arensky completed his First Symphony in B minor, Op. 4, in 1883, while still a student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. The work emerged from that fertile tension characteristic of Russian late Romanticism, where the academic tradition of Western European influence—above all that of Schumann and Mendelssohn—met the nascent national school. A pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov, Arensky brings together in this symphony solid craftsmanship with melodic warmth and lyrical intimacy.
The musical language is shaped by flowing cantilenas, a transparent handling of the orchestra, and a harmonic idiom that, despite its Romantic chromaticism, remains clear and well-balanced throughout. The work has an elegiac quality at its core, one that is characteristic of Arensky's compositional temperament and sets him apart from the more dramatically charged works of his contemporaries.
The symphony is regarded as an early and promising calling card from a composer who would later gain recognition above all through his chamber music and piano works. It reflects the awakening of a generation of Russian composers who sought to establish their own symphonic tradition without abandoning their dialogue with the Western European musical heritage.
