Karl Friedrich Abel ranks among the most important figures in eighteenth-century North German and English musical culture. A close friend and concert partner of Johann Christian Bach, he played a defining role in London's musical life of the period, and stood stylistically between the late Baroque in its final phase and an emerging Classicism. His compositional output is distinguished by elegant melodic writing, refined harmonic progressions, and a pronounced sensitivity to instrumental colour.
The Flute Concerto in C major (WK 51), composed between 1765 and 1770, is a characteristic example of Abel's galant style. The flute unfolds as a singing, melodically expressive solo instrument set against a slender string ensemble that carries the solo line with transparent lightness. The musical language is clear and bright, pervaded by that cultivated grace which marks Abel's music as a whole — close to the empfindsamer Stil ideal, yet always shaped by a balanced, never excessive expressiveness.
Within Abel's output of concertos, the work stands as a vivid testament to his ability to explore the natural qualities of an instrument — here the lyrical warmth and agility of the flute — with taste and stylistic refinement.
