Béla Bartók

Short biography: Béla Bartók (1881-1945) was a Hungarian composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist born in Nagyszentmiklós, Austria-Hungary (now Romania). He studied piano and composition at the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest from 1899 to 1903. Bartók spent much of his career collecting and studying folk music from Hungary, Romania, and other regions of Eastern Europe and North Africa. Due to the rise of fascism in Europe, he emigrated to the United States in 1940, where he spent his final years in relative obscurity and financial hardship.

Historical placement: Bartók was a leading figure of early 20th-century modernism, bridging late Romanticism with contemporary musical languages. His compositional style evolved from early Romantic influences through incorporation of folk music elements to a highly personal synthesis of traditional and avant-garde techniques. He made fundamental contributions to ethnomusicology and helped establish a distinctly Hungarian national musical identity. His work significantly influenced the development of modern classical music, particularly in rhythm, harmony, and the integration of folk elements.

Personal connections: Bartók studied composition with János Koessler at the Budapest Academy. He collaborated extensively with fellow Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály in folk music research and collection beginning around 1905. He taught piano at the Budapest Academy where his students included György Sándor.
