Horatio William Parker

Short biography Horatio William Parker was born on 15 September 1863 in Auburndale, Massachusetts, and died on 18 December 1919 in Cedarhurst, New York. He received his early musical training in the United States, studying amongst others with George Chadwick, before going to Munich from 1882 to 1885 to study with Josef Rheinberger at the Königliches Konservatorium. On his return to the United States he worked as an organist and choral director in New York, and subsequently as Professor and Dean of the School of Music at Yale University, where he taught from 1894 until his death.

Historical placement Parker belongs to the so-called 'Second New England School' (also known as the 'Boston Classicists'), a generation of American composers deeply shaped by German Romanticism. His style is firmly rooted in late German Romanticism, marked by contrapuntal rigour, harmonic density, and a predilection for large-scale choral works. He is regarded as one of the most significant American composers of his generation and played a decisive role in the professionalisation of musical life in the United States.

Personal connections Josef Rheinberger was Parker's principal teacher during his years of study in Munich and left a lasting imprint on his contrapuntally grounded compositional style. George Chadwick taught Parker in the United States prior to his European studies and, like Parker, belonged to the New England School. Charles Ives was one of Parker's most celebrated pupils at Yale University, where he studied from 1894 to 1898.
