Erik Satie

Short biography Erik Satie was born on 17 May 1866 in Honfleur, Normandy, France, and died on 1 July 1925 in Paris. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire from 1879, though his time there was marked by poor academic results and he left without completing a degree. He later studied counterpoint with Albert Roussel at the Schola Cantorum in Paris between 1905 and 1908, earning a diploma. For much of his adult life he lived in the working-class suburb of Arcueil, working as a café pianist in Montmartre before gaining wider recognition in his later years.

Historical placement Satie is associated with the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and occupies an unusual position bridging the Romantic era and musical modernism. His spare, ironic, and unconventional style stood in deliberate contrast to the lush textures of German Romanticism and even to the Impressionism of his contemporaries. He is considered a forerunner of several twentieth-century movements, including Neoclassicism, Minimalism, and the concept of ambient or "furniture music" (*musique d'ameublement*). His influence on the French group Les Six and on composers such as John Cage has been widely acknowledged.

Personal connections Claude Debussy was a close friend and colleague with whom Satie maintained a long, if sometimes complicated, personal and artistic relationship documented in their correspondence. Albert Roussel taught Satie counterpoint at the Schola Cantorum in the early twentieth century. Jean Cocteau collaborated with Satie on the ballet *Parade* (1917), contributing to the scenario and overall conception. Pablo Picasso, though a visual artist, is documented as the designer of the sets and costumes for *Parade*, making him a notable creative collaborator. Darius Milhaud and the members of Les Six acknowledged Satie as a direct inspiration, and Milhaud's connection to him is well documented.
