Short biography Jerónimo Giménez (full name: Jerónimo Giménez Bellido) was born on 10 October 1854 in Seville and died on 19 February 1923 in Madrid. He received his musical training at the Madrid Conservatoire and at the Paris Conservatoire, where he distinguished himself as an outstanding student. Following his return to Spain, he established himself as one of the most prolific and successful composers of the zarzuela in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He also worked as a conductor, directing various theatre orchestras in Madrid.
Historical placement Giménez belongs to the period of Spanish Romanticism and is associated above all with the genre of the zarzuela — the Spanish form of musical theatre. His style is characterised by memorable melody, rhythmic vitality, and a strongly felt rootedness in Andalusian folk music traditions. Alongside Ruperto Chapí and Tomás Bretón, he ranks as one of the central figures of the so-called "Género chico" movement, which established and cultivated the zarzuela as a form of popular entertainment theatre in Spain.
Personal connections A well-documented artistic collaboration existed with the composer Manuel Fernández Caballero, with whom Giménez co-composed several zarzuelas. He also worked with the librettist Carlos Arniches on a number of successful works; whilst Arniches was not himself a musician, he was one of the pivotal figures in Spanish musical theatre of the period. A professional association with the composer Ruperto Chapí is documented in the context of their joint activities in Madrid's theatrical life, though no further details have been established with certainty.
